丁乙， 先后毕业于上海市工艺美术学校和上海大学，学习装饰艺术与中国传统绘画， 曾在一家玩具厂担任设计师，现为上海市工艺美术学校老师。丁乙多元化的艺术背景在他的作品中完美呈现：高度机械化、重复性与精确性并存，同时不失对对形式化的实验性与创新性。
在学生时代的丁乙便喜欢用抽象去表达艺术，在1988年，他创作的《十示2007-10》中，丁乙创造了一种独特的视觉语言，与当时中国绘画的典型传统模式背道而驰。丁乙以十字架为正式参照物，有时无意义，有时与否定相关，丁乙与他的艺术环境中占主导地位的表达和情感建立了距离。然后，将设计原理与绘画原理相结合的想法产生了，他将这种方法称为“理性抽象”，其中格子的严格性与笔触和色彩的动态性相吻合。
丁乙的艺术实践包括绘画、雕塑和装置，意在于追求超越政治与历史下的艺术领域自由。正如他所说：“抽象艺术可以代表精神”。
丁乙目前在中国上海生活和工作。
