(Venezuela, 1923- France, 2005)
Jesús Rafael Soto was one of the main figures of Kinetic art. He studied at the Caracas School of Fine Arts and later relocated to Paris in 1950, where he became a part of “Los Disidentes”, a Venezuelan group of artists that seeked to renew their country´s art scene. During his career, he developed a crucial role in redefining the reach and social function of an artwork, starting from investigating the space-time unit of an object. Soto is commonly associated with Op art and his work is characterized by the continuous study of movement and dematerialization of form, producing Kinetic constructions in which the spectator´s active role is key.
In 1948 he started “Vibrations”, works made by overlapping different planes of plots, of mobile objects that create infinite possibilities of vibrations and variations. Through this method he achieved to develop accessible artworks to everyone without marking age or economic differences in the spectator and appealing to the subject in relation to the art object.
