Biography

El techo de la ballena (Daniel González) - 艺术家 - GALERÍA RGR

(San Juan de Los Morros, Venezuela, 1934)

Daniel González is an artist who has created sculptures, drawings, paintings, designs, documentaries, and photographs. His black and white images made visible the cracks of the process of modernization in Venezuela.

Gonzélez was born in San Juan de los Morros in 1934 and in the mid-1950s, he moved to study at the School of Plastic and Applied Arts in Caracas. During this time, he also became associated with the language of abstraction. Invited by artist Alejandro Otero, he carried out a project of geometric abstraction in graphic arts, which was exhibited in the National Art Hall of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1958. He lived in San Francisco where he became close to members of the Beat movement.

His work is inscribed in the Latin American history of photography since he was an original member of Sardio and El Techo de la Ballena, two important avant-garde groups that were crucial to the development of photo-books. He designed the three magazines-manifestoes that El Techo de la Ballena published between 1960 and 1963. Additionally, he designed several of the covers for books written by members of those groups.

El Techo de la Ballena (1961-1969) was an artistic-literary group enrolled in the Venezuelan avant-garde of the sixties. The group did not seek a unitary aesthetic and instead asked questions, demonstrated against injustices, exposed social realities, and tested the limits of art and literature.
