(Girona, Spain, 1911 - Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1966)
Juan Batlle Planas was an Argentine painter of Spanish origin belonging to the Surrealist tendencies in Buenos Aires.
Throughout his artistic career, he exhibited his work in numerous museums. In 1939 he inaugurated his first individual exhibition. In 1947 he opened a studio for teaching drawing, and in 1953 he began teaching classes on the psychology of form. In 1949, the Institute of Modern Art of Buenos Aires held a retrospective of his work.
Later in life his work leaned towards a Neoromantic attitude. His particular interest in the fantastic, dreams and hallucinatory was expressed through a technique of meticulous craftsmanship and an imaginative conception of the figure as a repository of metaphysical resonances.
He died in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1966.
