Cai Dongdong

Cai Dongdong was born in Tianshui, China in 1978.

Cai Dongdong joined the People's Liberation Army at an early age, assuming the role of portrait photographer for enlisted soldiers. This job became his formal training in the middle, becoming a professional career when he returned to Beijing and opened his studio.

Through archive research, found photographs and installation set-up, he manages to conjugate, in a playful way, fragmented realities that reflect on the temporality contained in the images and objects.

Taking ready-made materials, a nod to the Dadaist sensibilities of Duchamp, pierces the skin of these photographs with mirrors, arrows and other objects, forming what he calls "photo sculptures".

His work is in various public collections such as: Folkwang Museum, Essen, Germany, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China, CAFA Museum of Art (Central Academy of Fine Arts of China), Beijing, Three Shadows Photographic Arts Center, Beijing, Blue Mountain Contemporary Art, Israel, UNIDEE Art Foundation, Biella, Italy and Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow, among others.

Cai Dongdong currently lives and works in Beijing, China.
